New East Haven Schools Consolidation Plan to Cost $98M: Report

Several schools would be impacted and a few could close.

EAST HAVEN, CT - East Haven Superintendent of Schools Portia Bonner presented a new school consolidation plans that calls for closing Ferrara and D.C. Moore elementary schools, as well as Hays School.

Consolidation plans are include moving pre-school programs to the lower level of the high school, reconfiguring Joseph Melillo Middle School for grades 4-8, and moving the East Haven Academy to the Tuttle School location, among others, according to a report by the New Haven Register.

Bonner said declining enrollment and aging facilities is necessitating the revised plan.

The project is estimated to cost $98 million and East Haven taxpayers would have to pay $36 million, the Register reports.

But some school board members expressed concern that if schools close they could sit vacant for years just as the former East Haven High School building on 200 Tyler St. has.

The plan is for a four-to-five year timeline.

No vote was taken Tuesday.
