Remember Bean? He's Home Healing Thanks To East Haveners' Hearts
The Kowalczik family includes rescued white lab-husky mix Bean who needed life-saving care the family couldn't afford. East Haven stepped up

EAST HAVEN, CT — We met Bean a week ago. He was then desperately ill and life-saving veterinarian treatment was needed but his human dad, Chris Kowalczik, a US Marine veteran, has been out of work for a year due to the pandemic and the family could not afford the entire cost of the treatment. He and his wife Carol created a GoFundMe and Patch did a story to help spread the word and so, with donations from more than 230 folks, Bean, while not out of the woods medically, is home with his family and fellow rescued dog-brother Seamus, recovering.

"I know Carol posted something yesterday, but I wanted to give y’all an update and pass along some appreciation.
As you know, the doctors felt that Bean was stable enough to come home with close supervision and frequent follow up. Even though Bean is home, his fight isn’t over. He is on a lot of medications and will be for a while. He is going to lose weight, his fur is going to become unpleasant, and he may develop a skin rash, but we hope that this too will pass. The doctor said that Bean will be on these medications longer than other dogs because of the severity of his case.

Bean’s second stay in the hospital was $13,070.95. To date we have had 230 donations and 497 shares. I tried to personally thank every person who donated, if I missed anyone, I apologize. Your generosity has played a big role in having Bean home with us today. We cannot thank you all enough.I would like to specifically call out and thank someone I have yet to personally meet, Michael Roy for his help in supporting our fundraiser, putting us in touch with the Patch and for his positive thoughts, comments, and prayers. Thank you, brother.
I would also like to thank Ellyn Moran Santiago from The Patch. Your article brought attention to so many generous people. Thank you.
Bean has a check up tomorrow afternoon to check his PCV levels and if all goes well, he can remain home with us as he continues treatment.Thank you again to everyone, we are so blessed to have your support. We will continue to keep everyone updated. -Chris and Carol"
