EAST HAVEN, CT—Saying he gets that "nine to five office hours" don't work for everyone, State Rep. Joe Zullo Tuesday announced he'll hold office hours with constituents by appointment ahead of the 2021 legislative session.

"I understand that traditional 'nine to five' office hours aren't always convenient for constituents with families or those who work second or third shifts, and to accommodate as many schedules as possible I'm holding early, late, and weekend office hours throughout December," Zullo said.

"State lawmakers are most effective when the work they do is driven by the comments, concerns, and ideas from the people they serve," said Zullo, who serves East Haven’s 99th House District. "I look forward to hearing from as many East Haven residents as I can this month."

Last January, Zullo held a public forum in the library's Demayo room that detailed the legislative process. That event, he said, was a springboard for bill proposals. That venue isn't available use due to the pandemic, and Zullo is also seeking to minimize group interaction to keep his constituent sessions as safe as possible, he said.

The 2021 legislative session begins Jan. 6.

Office hours appointments are available:

Late: Mondays, Dec. 7 and Dec. 13: 5 to 7 p.m.

Early: Wednesdays, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16: 7 to 9 a.m.

Weekend: Saturdays, Dec. 12 and Dec. 19: 10 a.m. to noon

Locations for the meetings will be set when appointments are made to provide constituents with maximum flexibility and to make accommodations for COVID-19 protocols.

Zullo said he hopes to hold a virtual forum on the legislative process in January.

"State government isn't immune from the pressures of the pandemic—those of us who serve in Hartford must adapt to a new way doing business," Zullo said, adding that if this new office hours strategy works, and if there's enough demand, he may schedule a third week at the start of the new year.

"While I'm always accessible via e-mail and phone," he said, noting, "I'm hopeful residents, and maybe even some of our local elected and appointed officials, will take advantage of these in-person opportunities to meet and collaborate."
