Bud’s Search For New Family Continues: Hamden Animal Control

"It's hard to look him in the eyes and wonder if his final breaths will be taken inside the shelter walls," officials wrote about Bud.

HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Animal Control continues to try and find a home for their longtime resident, Bud, a beloved dog who has been in their care for one year. Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the day the animal control picked up Bud after he was left behind when his owner was evicted from a condemned house.

Bud became available for adoption last August and while officials are hopeful that his new family will someday walk through the door, they also know that at 12 years old, “the sand in Bud’s hourglass gets lower with every passing day.” Assistant Animal Control Officer Mitch Gibbs wrote an emotional post on Facebook Friday to mark Bud’s one-year anniversary. Some anniversaries mark joyful memories, some are heartbreaking, and then others bring a mix of emotions. Today marks one year that Bud has been with us at Hamden Animal Control and I am feeling a number of things. 365 days ago, we picked Bud up after he was left behind after an eviction at a condemned house. Bud had access to the empty house and his owner came every day to care for him, but realized he couldn’t longer give Bud what he needed. In these circumstances I am grateful that we could offer Bud a safe and secure place to stay.

Since taking Bud in he has given us plenty of smiles and laughs. From his donut catching abilities to his frequent walks with the volunteers who adore him at the Wallingford shelter. From his peanut butter faces to his excellent behavior at his veterinary visits, Bud is loved by all who know him.

To see him stretched out across his shelter bed, nestled with his favorite toys it’s obvious that Bud thinks he’s the king of the castle. Little does he know that he deserves so much more.

To look into his eyes, it’s clear that Bud enjoys all the love and attention. But it’s gut wrenching for us to know that at 12 years of age, the sand in Bud’s hourglass gets lower with every passing day.

Bud became available for adoption in August of last year, and with every day that goes by we wait and wonder when Bud’s new family will walk through the shelter door.

We realize that because Bud is a “golden oldie” he is quickly passed by for younger dogs. The fact that he must be an only pet is another obstacle.

Believe me, Bud has seen a lot of bad things in his younger years. His current demeanor is a testimony to his exceptional nature. It’s hard to look him in the eyes and wonder if his final breaths will be taken inside the shelter walls.

Please, share Bud’s story. There is a family for him somewhere out there, they just don’t know it yet. Together we can guide him home. Thank you.
