Burglar Broke Into Store Through Roof: Hamden Police

A man has been charged in two burglaries, including one where police said he stole 132 packs of cigarettes, 12 bottles of Cognac and cash.

HAMDEN, CT — A man is accused of burglarizing two businesses in Hamden earlier this year, according to police.

Michael Cancel, 30, was arrested Thursday at Meriden Superior Court on a warrant in connection with burglaries that happened in January and March.

Cancel is accused of breaking into the Exxon Express Food Mart, 2263 Whitney Ave., by entering through the roof on Jan. 15, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said Cancel stole several items, including cigarettes, lottery tickets and money.

Cancel is accused of breaking into Discount Wine and Spirits, 1980 Whitney Ave., on March 10. An investigation found that he threw a large rock through the front glass door, according to Smith.

Smith said Cancel stole numerous items, including 132 packs of cigarettes, 12 bottles of Cognac and money.

Cancel was charged with two of third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree larceny and two counts of criminal mischief. He was held in lieu of bonds totaling $35,000.
