February 26 2020
The Hamden Art League’s guest artist at its March 10th meeting will be American Impressionist Jim Laurino presenting ’Oil: Painting a Textured Landscape”. In an interactive demonstration, in which the audience is encouraged to ask questions, Mr. Laurino will cover his canvas with his signature heavy application of paint, describing what he is doing as he works. At the conclusion of the demo the audience will have a solid understanding of his approach to painting, and his painting style.

Jim began painting as a teenager and was fortunate to receive basic instruction from noted marine painters Carl G. Evers, and Christopher Blossom. He went on to study painting, design, and color theory at the University of Connecticut. Through more recent workshops and self-study, including several summers on Monhegan Island with the Tree Top crew (a plein air group assembled by Frank Bruckmann), Jim has cultivated a bold representational painting style that balances the Impressionist influence with contemporary subject matter. His expressive application of paint portraying classic New England scenes makes his work unique and sought after.
Jim constructs frames for all of his paintings. The frames, which are made out of reclaimed wood material, fashion a rustic window into each piece, subtly complimenting his work. His paintings are in numerous private collections. He shows his work in galleries throughout the nutmeg state, and enjoys participating in competitive events across the Northeast. Most recently, Mr. Laurino received the Artists' Choice Award for his painting Split-Rock at the 2019 Parrsboro, Nova Scotia plein air competition.
