A Brief Overview of Connex’s History:
Connex Credit Union first launched on July 31, 1940, as a small company known as the New Haven Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union. Initially chartered to exclusively service SNET employees and their families, the credit union spent the next 60 years expanding its affiliations to more than 450 companies and organizations.
Despite this substantial growth, the credit union still was limited to only serving employees and family members of affiliated organizations. This eventually changed in December 2002 when it received approval to convert from a federal charter to a community-based state charter. As a result, anyone who lives, works, attends school or worships in New Haven, Hartford, Middlesex or Fairfield counties was now able to become a member. In June 2003, the then New England Financial Credit Union (SNEFCU) officially changed its name to Connex to reflect its new community-based focus and launch a new era for the credit union.
Over the last 80 years, a small 10-member organization has blossomed into a thriving community institution. With more than 60,000 members and assets reaching nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars, Connex is now one of Connecticut’s largest credit unions.
