Hamden Obituaries: Armando “Red” Mirto, 90

He was well loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.



Armando “Red” Mirto, 90, formerly of Hamden, died at the Skyview Center in Wallingford on Dec. 21, 2013. He was the husband of the late Rose Barbato Mirto.

Red was born in New Haven on Feb. 20, 1923, the son of the late Pasquale & Mary Brilotti Mirto, and resided in Hamden most of his life. He was a butcher, owning the Universal Food Store in New Haven before working for Sanzone Market in Hamden for 30 years and Montowese Meat Market for 20 years.

He was active in St. Ann’s Church, where he was an usher. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Highwood Post #150 American Legion and the DAV. He had served on the Legislative Council as the representative from the third district and was active in the Hamden Democratic Party.

He also enjoyed his trips to the casino. He was well loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by a daughter, Rosemarie Rosenfeld of Meriden, sons, Thomas (Kathi) Mirto of Shelton, and Robert (Sharon) Mirto of Newark, Del. a brother, Albert (Marge) Mirto of Branford, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a son, Patrick Mirto and siblings, Tess Raffone, Gloria Mentone, Mario and Lucille Mirto.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., in the Peter H. Torello & Son Funeral Home, 1022 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery.
