Hamden Obituaries: John Raymond Barera, 87
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was aboard the USS St. Paul which accompanied the Battleship Missouri when the Japanese surrender was signed in the Pacific in 1945.
John Raymond Barera, 87, of Hamden, passed away Oct. 17, 2013 in Whitney Manor. He was the husband for 34 years of Judith Slater Barera.
Born in West Haven on Aug. 16, 1926, he was the son of the late Pierre and Mary Taborelli Barera. Prior to his retirement, he was a printer for Southern New England Typographic Service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was aboard the USS St. Paul which accompanied the Battleship Missouri when the Japanese surrender was signed in the Pacific in 1945.
He was a dedicated husband and father who loved dogs, hockey and camping in Vermont. He was a member of one of the last classes to graduate from the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven before it moved to Hyde Park, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, John Raymond (Carol) Barera of Belmont, Mass.; three grandchildren, John Raymond III, Phillip and Nicole; three great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joann Simanton, a brother, Pierre Barera and a sister, Arlene Erickson.
Friends may call at The Celentano Funeral Home, 424 Elm St. (cor. Dwight) New Haven Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Monday morning at 10 a.m. Interment, with Military Honors will be in Green Lawn Cemetery, East Haven.
