Hamden Obituaries: Walter T. Catchings, Jr., 89

Walter T. Catchings, Jr., 89, of Hamden, departed this life Dec. 13, 2013. He was the husband of Gloria Chappelle Catchings.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on Feb. 10, 1924, he was the son of the late Walter T. Catchings, Sr. and Luella Catchings. Prior to retiring, he was employed at U.S. Repeating Arms as a Machine Operator.

Mr. Catchings was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by close family friends, Karen Alexander Holloway and Mr. and Mrs. Maud Alexander, Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, June Catchings; brothers-in-law, O.C. and Eugene Chappelle; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Stevens, Barbara Chappelle, and Mildred Robins.

A celebration of Mr. Catchings’ life and legacy will be held Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ, 217 Dixwell Ave., New Haven. Viewing will be held at the church from 10 -11 a.m. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
