Hamden Police Awarded $60,000 For Distracted Driving Program
The grant will cover 100 percent of staffing expenses associated with the program helping Hamden to enforce laws against distracted driving.

Mayor Curt Balzano Leng and Acting Police Chief John Sullivan are pleased to announce that the Hamden Police Department has been awarded $60,000 from the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation for the 2020 Distracted Driving High Visibility Enforcement program. The grant was accepted at the October 5th meeting of the Hamden Legislative Council.

The grant will cover 100% of all Hamden Police Department staffing expenses associated with the program, helping Hamden to enforce laws against distracted driving. As a whole, the program aims to reduce the cause of accidents and injuries resulting from drivers distracted by handheld mobile devices, in addition to minimizing other motor vehicle distractions.
Acting Chief John Sullivan commented, “The objective of this program is to reduce fatalities and injuries resulting from accidents caused by distracted driving, with a focus on those caused by the use of hand held mobile phones. The program is designed to keep the residents of Hamden safer on the roadway.”

Mayor Leng also remarked, “I would just like to extend my thanks to the State for their support in funding this program, to our fantastic Hamden Police Department for their work in keeping our streets safe, and to our residents for respecting the laws and remaining vigilant and cautious when driving through our great Town.”
