Driver Dies After ‘Major’ Crash In Hamden
One driver was killed and another was hospitalized with serious injuries after a crash Thursday morning in Hamden, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — An 87-year-old man died after a “major” crash Thursday in Hamden, according to police.
Emergency crews responded to the 700 block of Shepard Avenue around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 on the report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.
Police found that Russell Riccio, 87, of Hamden, was driving north on Shepard Avenue and struck a vehicle that was traveling south on Shepard Avenue. The vehicle was operated by a 75-year-old Hamden resident, according to Smith.

After the collision, Riccio's vehicle left the road and struck a tree. He was seriously injured and taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died from his injuries, according to Smith.
The 75-year-old Hamden resident was also taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with serious injuries that weren’t life threatening, according to Smith.

Shepard Avenue was closed for several hours but has reopened, according to Smith.
