Man Shot Person Who Was Trying To Steal His Vehicle: Hamden PD

The man shot the person who was trying to steal his vehicle in a store parking lot late Saturday night in Hamden, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — A man shot the person who was trying to steal his car in a store parking lot late Saturday night in Hamden, according to police.

Police responded to Alltown Fresh, 1941 Dixwell Ave., around 11:45 p.m. on the report of an “attempted carjacking,” according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Police found that a 29-year-old Meriden resident entered the store while leaving his vehicle running, Smith said.

While he was inside the store, a stolen vehicle with three occupants entered the parking lot. A 20-year-old New Haven resident got out of the stolen vehicle and entered the victim’s vehicle, according to Smith.

Smith said the 20-year-old then placed the vehicle in reverse and nearly struck a woman who tried to intervene. As the 20-year-old tried to leave the parking lot, the owner of the vehicle left the store and ran toward his vehicle, according to Smith.

The 20-year-old then got out of the vehicle and was reportedly in the possession of a gun. The owner of the vehicle then took out a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, striking the 20-year-old in the leg, according to Smith.

Smith said the 20-year-old got back into the stolen vehicle that he arrived in and was driven to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Police are continuing to investigate and Smith said arrests are expected.
