Obituary: Fred L. Griego, 72; Formerly Of Hamden

Fred, a U.S. Army veteran who received a bronze star, worked at Porto's Tire for many years. He was a kind, giving and selfless man.

HAMDEN, CT — Fred Lawrence Griego, 72, of Englewood, Florida, passed away surrounded by his family on March 21, 2021 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in New Haven, CT on July 8, 1948 to the late Lawrence and Mary Griego.

Fred served in the United States Army as an 11 BRAVO infantry solider. He spent 1968-1969 in Vietnam. Fred received a bronze star for his heroic act fighting for our country.

Fred lived in Hamden and worked at Porto’s Tire for many years. After moving to the sunshine state of Florida he worked at Stern’s Tire for more than 20 years.

He became an avid golfer and luckily getting a “hole in one” on Sept. 17, 2018, which he was extremely proud of. Fred loved classic cars, music and gardening.

He was a man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. He was kind, giving and a selfless man who lived life with love for his family and friends.

Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to all. He will be extremely missed and loved by all that knew him.

Fred is preceded by his parents Lawrence and Mary Griego and godson Lawrence Griego ll. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Michelle (LaCourse) Griego, daughters Susan Marie Griego and Jenn (Griego) Carangelo both of Hamden. Brother Anthony (Judy) Griego of Hamden, sister Charlotte (Griego) Struble of Wallingford. Grandchildren Tyler and Demeri Carangelo of Hamden. Cousin Paul (Sandi) Barbiero of North Haven. Nieces and Nephews, Donna (Eagen) Duncan, Douglas Eagen, Michele DiGiovannantonio, Kirk and Craig Struble and MANY friends.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be held PROMPTLY at 11 a.m. Saturday JUNE 5, 2021 at THE HAMDEN VETERANS MEMORIAL WALL 2623 Dixwell Ave., Hamden. In honor of Fred’s service please wear RED, WHITE or BLUE to honor our flag and country.
