Pedestrian-Involved Crashes Increase In Hamden: Police

Police are offering safety tips after reporting that accidents involving injured pedestrians increased by 10 percent over the previous year.

HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Police Department saw a 10 percent increase in motor vehicles accidents involving injured pedestrians in 2020 over the previous year, according to officials.

Police Capt. Ronald Smith said the department investigated 31 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2020 with about 45 percent of the accidents happening on Dixwell Avenue.

Police are urging pedestrians to:

- Cross the street within a marked crosswalk.

- Use the sidewalk, if available.

- If there are no sidewalks, cross at the corner.

- Walk on the shoulder on the roadway, if there is no sidewalk. Do not walk in the street.

- Avoid crossing the street between parked vehicles.

- AVOID DISTRACTIONS. Do not cross the street while talking on the cell phone or texting. Please pay attention to your surroundings.
