Quinnipiac Community to Participate in the 12th Annual Big Event

The Big Event is a day of community service that connects Quinnipiac students, faculty, staff, alumni with community partners.

HAMDEN, CT – Nearly 600 members of the Quinnipiac University community will take part in the 12th annual Big Event from 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 10.

The Big Event is a day of community service that connects Quinnipiac students, faculty, staff and alumni with community partners in the Greater New Haven area and beyond.

“The Big Event gives us all an opportunity to give back to our local communities,” said Quinnipiac student Alysa Lawson, who is co-directing the Big Event with fellow senior Kara Boninsegna. “The Hamden and Greater New Haven areas support Quinnipiac in so many ways throughout the year and the Big Event allows us to say, ‘thank you’ to local residents.”

During this year’s Big Event, Quinnipiac students, faculty, staff and alumni will form teams and spruce up sites in Bethany, Cheshire, Hamden, New Haven, North Haven, Orange, Southington, Wallingford and West Haven.

“We are following all university and state guidelines in regard to COVID precautions,” Lawson added. “Teams are being limited to family units and capacities at sites will be reduced to maintain proper social distancing protocols.”

Participants will volunteer at specific locations, including Camp Cedarcrest in Orange, Edgerton Park in New Haven, the Keefe Community Garden in Hamden, the Clelian Center in Hamden, the Russel Homestead in Bethany, the Union Street Dog Park in New Haven and the West Haven Community Center.

“Planning the Big Event is a chance for us to have a hand in impacting the surrounding community in a positive way,” Boninsegna said. “With so many people hurting right now and throughout the last year, the Quinnipiac community can take this one day to give back to our communities and make a difference during these unprecedented times.”

The Big Event is a nationwide day of service when colleges and universities send teams to volunteer in the surrounding community. Students also collect money and non-perishable food items to benefit area charities. The Big Event originated at Texas A&M University in 1982.
