Quinnipiac University to Participate in United Way Event

Quinnipiac University to participate in United Way event by assembling garden kits for the community on June 24

HAMDEN, CT – Quinnipiac University is teaming up with the United Way of Greater New Haven to expand access to community garden resources in Hamden.

Together, they will help promote a more sustainable and equitable food system in the community by assembling garden kits from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, at the Keefe Center Community Garden in Hamden. The garden is managed by Quinnipiac’s Albert Schweitzer Institute in partnership with the Keefe Center and the United Way. Quinnipiac students, faculty and staff have cultivated the garden and hosted events there since March 2020.
Volunteers will help put together gardening kits that will be distributed through the Hamden food pantry to expand access to the garden and address food insecurity. The effort is part of the United Way’s Week of Action.

“The garden plays an essential role in addressing food insecurity in Hamden by providing produce to the food pantry at Keefe,” said Sean Duffy, executive director of the Albert Schweitzer Institute and professor of political science at Quinnipiac. “This will be an opportunity to help support home food cultivation in southern Hamden more generally.”

Angel Wang, a rising sophomore in the entry-level Dual-Degree BS in Health Science Studies/Master's Physician Assistant (ELMPA) program, is interning at the garden this summer through the Schweitzer Institute.

“Working at the community garden to deliver food to the food pantry has been truly rewarding over the past few weeks,” Wang said. “I look forward to this event where more people can get involved in the garden and work together to fight food insecurity in the community.”

Wang will be joined on June 24 by five students from Quinnipiac’s occupational therapy program who are working on their summer capstone project at the Keefe Center. Hamden and United Way officials also will attend.

“Quinnipiac University has been an incredible partner of United Way, both through its workplace campaign and active volunteerism,” said Jennifer Heath, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater New Haven. “We are proud to work together during Week of Action to address food insecurity in Hamden and create lasting change.”
