Hamden, CT – Sept. 24, 2019 – The Quinnipiac University Theater Program will present the play, “Red Speedo,” Oct. 10-13, in the Center for Theatre Arts at Quinnipiac, 515 Sherman Avenue.

“We picked ‘Red Speedo’ for its highly relevant themes in relation to our current news headlines,” said Mariah Sage, adjunct professor of theater and director of the show. “Our hope is that our audience will get a deeper understanding of privilege, our personal ethics and the incredible pressure that young people feel to succeed in America.”

Ray (played by Liam Devlin of Branchburg, New Jersey) has swam his way to the eve of the Olympic trials. If he makes the team, he’ll land a deal with Speedo. However, when someone’s stash of performance-enhancing drugs is found in the locker room, the entire team’s Olympic fate is threatened, and Ray finds himself in an ethical dilemma. “Red Speedo” is a sharp and stylish play about swimming, the survival of the fittest and the American dream of a level playing field, or of leveling the field yourself.

Other members of the cast include: Joseph Powell of Charlton, Massachusetts, who plays Peter; Elizabeth Miller of Plainwell, Michigan, who plays Lydia; and Julia Brignano of Farmington, who plays coach.

Abbey Copeland, assistant teaching professor of theater, will design the set, while Ted Boyce-Smith will be responsible for lighting. Other members of the production team are Rose Bochansky, technical director; Kevin Copeland, sound designer; Camille Manley, stage manager; Paige Parton, producer; and Katya Vetrov, costume designer.

Written by Lucas Hnath, “Red Speedo” won a 2016 Obie Award for playwriting and premiered Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in February 2016.

Curtain time is at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10-12. Additional performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 and 13. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, visit theater.qu.edu. For more information, call 203-582-8652.
