Walmart Foundation Gives $5000 for COVID-19 PPE
The Children's Center of Hamden is a recipient of a Walmart Community Grant

The Walmart Foundation has a long history of giving back to the community. Mrs. Helen Walton, wife of Walmart founder, Sam Walton used to say, “It’s not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.” The foundation’s recent $5,000 donation to The Children’s Center helped the agency purchase PPE for essential employees and children. The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the Center’s budget with unanticipated costs in the thousands. The Center keeps an inventory of face masks, face shields, gowns and gloves for essential employees. Employees are screened for the virus daily and a janitorial team has been added to enhance cleaning. Children’s Center CEO Selma Ward hosts a daily huddle with senior management first thing every morning to keep a pulse on the needs of her team. Employees include direct care workers who attend to the needs of the children 24 hours a day by working one of three 8 hour shifts. Nurses, therapists, dietary and maintenance staff are also considered essential. With the need to mitigate the spread of the virus on the forefront of everyone’s mind, the Center continues to provide enjoyable childhood experiences, treatment and education for those enrolled. The agency has a rich history of caring for children through difficult times, providing rehabilitation during the polio epidemic and shelter during world wars. Consistent throughout the Center’s 187 years is the support from people in the community who, like the Walmart Foundation, want to help children.
