Woman, 70, Robbed Of Purse While Walking In Hamden: Police

A 7-Eleven was robbed at gunpoint and two women were assaulted during robberies over the weekend in Hamden, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — A 70-year-old woman was shoved to the ground and robbed of her purse while she was walking Sunday evening in Hamden, according to police.

It was one of three robberies that happened over the weekend, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said the 70-year-old woman was attacked when she was walking on Mix Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Two men, who were in their 30s, got out of a stolen vehicle and shoved the woman to the ground, according to Smith.

They stole her handbag, which contained money, a cell phone and keys, according to Smith. The stolen vehicle, described as a brown Jeep Cherokee, was later found abandoned in New Haven.

Police also responded to 7-Eleven, 1795 Dixwell Ave., around 6 a.m. on Saturday on the report of an armed robbery.

Smith said the robber entered the store brandishing a gun. He ordered an employee “down to the ground” and then forcibly held him, while pointing the gun at the back of his head, according to Smith.

The robber then ordered the other employees to empty the cash register and then ran away toward Lee Street, Smith said.

Then around 1 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to the 1400 block of Dixwell Avenue on the report of a street robbery. A 39-year-old Hamden resident told police that she was walking north on Dixwell Avenue when a small, blue sports utility vehicle, pulled in front of her and blocked the sidewalk, according to Smith.

A young man got out of the vehicle and grabbed her arm. He then punched her in the head while trying to grab her purse, Smith said.

As the purse fell to the ground, the teen entered the vehicle, which was being driven by another person, according to Smith. The driver sped away heading south on Dixwell Avenue.
