NEW HAVEN, CT — A Manchester athlete won the girls 1,600 meters and four new Class LL championship meet records were set Thursday as the first state titles of the 2019-20 CIAC winter season were awarded at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Korey Morton of Brien McMahon High School won the boys 55 meter dash in 6.42 seconds, breaking the longstanding record of 6.44 set by Michael Lorick of Danbury in 2007. Sophomore sensation Gavin Sherry of Conard set a new mark of 9:06.06 in the 3200 meter run, smashing Fairfield Prep's Drew Thompson's 2018 record by more than 11 seconds.

On the girls' side, Paige Martin of Norwich Free Academy set a new bar in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 3.5 inches to erase the old mark of 11-8, established by Megan Biscoglio of Southington in 2018. Tess Stapleton of Fairfield Ludlowe broke her own record from last year of 8.25 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles, breaking the tape in 7.96.
