Editor’s note: We published this story earlier in the week, but here it is again in case you missed it.
After receiving feedback from an incident on July 17, Manchester Police Department Capt. Christopher Davis posted this note on social media:
“Reverse 911 Notification Info: With regards to some of the questions that were recently posed concerning notification via reverse 911 calls, there are (2) separate issues that were identified during Friday night’s incident.

-The first issue concerns those of you that do not have a landline phone in your residence. In speaking with our IT personnel, I was told that individuals can in fact register their information at the CT Alert Website: http://www.ct.gov/ctalert/site/default.asp. When we activate an alert, we draw upon the information from this system. If you do not have a landline phone in your residence, or if you do but also want to receive notification via cell phone or other means, than I highly recommend that you register your current information including an address.
-The second issue that came up was one of not being notified because you were outside of the geographic area identified. When we activated the reverse 911 notifications, we needed to identify some parameters for who to notify about the situation. Based on the information that we had, I identified a geographic area that I believed would be most impacted by our efforts and those individuals were notified via reverse 911. Taking into account the responses that I have received, in the future it may be beneficial to increase the geographic area that is notified or to make a town-wide notification if at all feasible.
