Bicycle Theft Solved By School Resource Officer In Milford

MILFORD, CT — A middle school, school resource officer is credited with helping to solve the theft of a bicycle from a city school, police officials said.

At a recent Board of Police Commissioners meeting, officials said that a school resource officer at the middle school, helped solve the theft of a student’s bicycle from the bike rack at school.

Officials also noted the officer's "compassion and care for the student and the situation," according to meeting minutes.

Chairman Richard Smith added it is incidents such as the West Shore Middle School bicycle theft and the way it was handled by "one of our officers that makes are officers and the work they do special."

Police Chief Keith Mello stated he serves on various task forces and one of them is to have police be law enforcement officers and not deal with policing complaints but only have police respond to those incidents where there is criminality.

He added the department is proud of its officers and if such a recommendation goes forward "you may start to see situations like the one mentioned not addressed. He added the Department is proud of the fact that we hopefully improve people’s quality of life."
