CT Weather: Tropical Storm Warning Issued For 3 CT Counties

A tropical storm warning has been issued in advance of Elsa's expected track over Connecticut late Thursday and Friday.

CONNECTICUT — A tropical storm warning has now been issued for portions of New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties as Tropical Storm Elsa inches closer to Connecticut.

The entire state is expected to see between 2-4 inches of rain, flash flooding is a concern, and the storm could even spark a tornado, and of course there could be tropical storm force wind gusts.

The worst of the weather is late Thursday and Friday morning. Some showers and thunderstorms may break out beginning Thursday afternoon. Power outages remain a major concern. The strongest wind gusts will be at the coast, especially in southeast Connecticut.

Elsa is currently 650 miles southwest of New York City as of Thursday morning. Elsa is expected to remain a tropical storm as it advances toward Connecticut.

WTNH News 8 chief meteorologist Gil Simmons said there is a "risk of severe thunderstorms again for this afternoon!"

"Tropical storm Elsa will be approaching Connecticut and create rough weather for Friday morning!" Simmons wrote on social media. "I’m looking at flooding rain, very windy conditions and a scattered tornado warnings possible! There will also be power outages especially at the shoreline and eastern Connecticut! The storm will be gone for Friday afternoon! There could be more thunderstorms Friday evening!"

Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London County: Heavy rainfall ahead of tropical system Elsa will move into portions of the Tri-State area late Thursday night, with periods of heavy rainfall possible through Friday morning. Although heavy rainfall will be possible as early as Thursday afternoon, the greater chances for this will begin Thursday night. Total rainfall from Thursday afternoon through Friday is expected to range mostly 2 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.


Hartford, Tolland, and Windham County: Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts up to 6 inches are possible late tonight through Friday afternoon. This rainfall brings the threat for flash flooding, with the main flood threat being along urban and poor drainage areas as well as small streams.

I-95 corridor impacts:

Today: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Light northeast wind becoming east 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Tonight: Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 71. South wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Friday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2pm, then showers likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 83. East wind 10 to 14 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming north after midnight.


Interior sections of southern Connecticut impacts:

Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
