Decorating Signposts For The Holidays Takes Off In Milford

It started as one unplanned thing and has spread across the city. What do you think of it?

MILFORD, CT — The city of Milford is getting some widespread attention as some residents have been decorating signposts for the holidays.

Several published reports including local TV stations have covered the story. The idea for decorating signposts started with Sharon Rutledge, who told Fox 61 TV that she was surprised by how much it has grown around Milford and that folks just want to have something positive to latch onto during these difficult times.

"This was very much unplanned on my part," Rutledge told Fox 61. "I was decorating the outside of my house and said, 'let me just do the sign out front for my neighbors' just a way to say Merry Christmas, happy holidays."

Milford Police have shared some concerns as the act of putting anything on a street pole is technically illegal but officials told Fox 61 that they won't request the decorations be taken down unless they see someone actually doing it. Police stress that the actual street sign cannot be covered up.

On the city of Milford's Facebook page, Dee Piccolo wrote, "It’s clearly a sweet thing and uplifting however who started the idea? I haven’t seen one that covered the sign. It makes people smile and in good taste. Especially now."
