MILFORD, CT ? The Planning and Zoning Board approved plans for Splash car wash at 1553 Boston Post Road.

Plans call for a 6,250 square foot building that is 32 feet tall. The location is currently a vacant lot located next to Acura of Milford and across from Q Gardens.

The state Department of Transportation will need to approve an encroachment permit before plans are fully approved.

Splash representative Jason Frank said it's been a passion of his to bring a location to his hometown.

The location will have automated pay stations for car washes. Vacuum use will be free for customers. The traffic pattern is set up to avoid causing traffic backups on the Boston Post Road, Frank said.

Milford's location will have more than 30 queuing spaces for waiting vehicles. Cars would enter on the side of the property and queue behind the building.

"We're not going to offer any kind of full service car washing or towel drying or washing windows," he said. "It's just an express car wash model."

Modern car wash tunnels are able to wash several vehicles at once.

"Throughput won't be a problem, we don't foresee any traffic or backup issues," he said.

Vehicles will be able to turn left or right onto the Boston Post Road. Board Vice Chairman Robert Satti expressed some concern about turning left onto the Post Road.

"A left exit coming on to the Post Road at two in the morning is about the only way that vehicle is going to turn left," he said.

Project design engineer Darren Overton said traffic engineers looked at the pattern and determined there would be times when cars could turn left onto the Boston Post Road thanks to traffic signals on either side of the property.

"We have submitted the plans to DOT for review, trust me, they will look very carefully at all the turning moments," Overton said.

Splash also plans to open a location in East Haven in about three weeks and was also recently approved for a Derby location. There are about 20 locations in Connecticut.
