Milford Firefighters Rescue Kayaker From Frigid Waters

MILFORD, CT ? Firefighters rescued a kayaker Monday from the frigid waters off Walnut Beach, according to fire officials. The kayaker was then hospitalized.

Firefighters responded to the call at 5:28 p.m. A caller had spotted a person struggling in the water off Walnut Beach and called for help.

Lt. Casey Bertollo piloted a jet ski with Water Rescuer Specialist Jack Lancelin and reached the kayaker within minutes.

They brought the kayaker safely aboard by 5:40 p.m.

The kayaker was wearing a personal flotation device, which "aided in the rapid and safe rescue," according to fire officials.

He was taken to a local hospital under advanced life support care. This higher level of medical care is used to "to stabilize critical patients who may have suffered a life-threatening event like cardiac arrest, acute coronary syndrome, or stroke" while preparing to take the patient to a hospital, according to the American Red Cross.

Milford police also responded and assisted.

"The Milford Fire Department reminds all boaters and paddlers of the importance of wearing a (personal flotation device) at all times while on the water, and commends the bystander whose quick action helped ensure a safe outcome," the fire department wrote on Facebook.
