MILFORD, CT — The city's No. 1 taxpayer and the largest mall in the state is considering plans that are making officials nervous, according to a report in the New Haven Register.

The owners of the Connecticut Post Mall, 1201 Boston Post Road, are seeking approval to construct 300 luxury rental units on the mall property adjacent to Old Gate Lane where Sears auto center was located, reports Luther Turmelle, of the New Haven Register.

Mayor Ben Blake told the Register it's a "terrible idea" and officials are hoping for offices instead of housing units. The housing plan would include a pool and fitness center.

Plans will come before the city's land-use boards in September. It's no secret that malls across the country have been dying a slow death at the hands of Amazon and are desperate to reinvent themselves. The coronavirus pandemic has also accelerated a loss of business for retailers too.

The Connecticut Post Mall began that reinvention process several years ago by adding L.A. Fitness and Dave & Busters to the site. This would be the next step forward for the mall which has more than 1 million square-feet of retail space. And there is also a mall across the street anchored by Walmart.
