CONNECTICUT — Tropical Storm Elsa dropped more than five inches of rain in parts of the state this week and a side effect from all of that rain in a short amount of time is that some untreated sewage may have been discharged into some large bodies of water, according to state officials.

In a news advisory issued late Friday, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the state Department of Public Health wrote jointly:

"ADVISORY: Following significant rainfall from Tropical Storm Elsa, DEEP & DPH are advising against recreational water contact & swimming over the next 48 hours in the following areas, which have experienced discharges of untreated sewage: the Quinnipiac River, urbanized areas, and within and in close proximity to Bridgeport, Hartford, Wallingford, Norwalk, Norwich, and the greater New Haven area.

"Shoreline State Parks with beaches remain open. By the time the rain stopped today, it was too late to sample and get results that would definitely determine water quality at the Shoreline beaches. However, these State Beaches are not in close proximity to the known discharges," the advisory concludes.

DEEP samples water quality at the state swim areas weekly and will do so again early next week.
