Southern CT Weather: Flood Watch Issued For Tuesday/Wednesday

The weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook for southern Connecticut, and local forecasters issue an update on Debby impacts.

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT ? In an update, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning for southern Connecticut.

"Heavy rainfall results in the potential for flooding. While much of the flooding is expected to be localized, significant flooding is possible due to rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Especially along fast responding rivers and streams, and in more urbanized locations," the weather service said.

"There is a Slight Risk for Excessive Rainfall on Tuesday with expected isolated to scattered instances of flash flooding," the weather service said in a statement.

The best chance for showers and storms is after 2 p.m. Tuesday and the rain could linger into Wednesday. The rest of the week looks unsettled due to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.

"Based on the latest data, we?ve dropped the First Alert for this evening/tonight. Dry through most of the day, increasing clouds tonight, and a chance for passing showers through Tuesday morning. It will likely be the warmest day over the next seven," said WFSB 3 TV meteorologists.

"Showers before noon will be possible tomorrow, otherwise mainly dry during the day. The coverage of rain looks to ramp back up again Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. There is a level 2 risk for excessive rainfall," said WFSB 3 TV forecasters. "We catch a brief break in humid conditions Wednesday into Thursday, before tropical air returns and potential moisture connected with the remnants of Debby. At this time, Friday and Saturday look to be the primary focus days for the possibility of tropical downpours from what will be the remnants of Debby. Being this far out, the forecast is subject to change, with plenty of details to iron out until then." (Read/watch more at WFSB 3 TV).

Here are the updated forecast details for southern Connecticut from the National Weather Service:


Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Increasing clouds, with a low around 73. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a low around 64. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Northeast wind around 11 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63.

Thursday: A 40 percent chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
