Ivy League Cancels Spring Sports Season Due to Coronavirus Fears

Fears over the coronavirus have prompted officials of all eight Ivy League institutions to cancel the spring sports season.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Following Tuesday's announcement by the Ivy League of the cancellation of its postseason men's and women's basketball tournaments, campus presidents unanimously voted Wednesday to cancel all spring athletic practices and competition through the remainder of the academic year.

The news was posted around 3 p.m. Wednesday on the Yale University website, signed by the presidents of all eight member institutions.

"In accordance with the guidance of public health and medical professionals, several Ivy League institutions have announced that students will not return to campus after spring break, and classes will be held virtually during the semester. Given this situation, it is not feasible for practice and competition to continue," the notification read.

Yale is the only Connecticut university in the Ivy League. Other members are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania.
