Kimono: Large-scale Collages by Kathy Kane

New Show at City Gallery

Large scale, collaged kimonos will grace the walls of City Gallery in a bold new exhibit by painter Kathy Kane. Appropriately titled KIMONO, six colorful, 8 x6 feet kimonos will be on display from March 6 - 28, with an opportunity to Meet the Artist on two Saturdays, March 6 and March 28.

When asked about the uniquely-presented show, Kane explained, “I recently became interested in building large scale collages. That they evolved into these kimonos was a random but visceral discovery. The process has been instinctive, unreasoning, and most enjoyable.”

Kane’s process begins by pouring, dribbling, and spattering paint onto full sheets of watercolor paper and allowing the colors to mix and blend. Her tools include squeegees, chopsticks, and other unconventional tools. Once a few pieces are finished, she assembles the new kimono on a wall, referencing each piece to the next as she continues to make further connections using brushwork. The final assembly of the kimonos will be completed at the gallery.
