New Haven Police, City To Hold Gun Buy-Back Program Saturday

Created to prevent suicide, accidental gun discharges, and domestic violence, gift cards ranging from $10 to $150 will be traded for guns.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Getting unwanted guns out of the community "dramatically" reduces the risk of suicide, accidental gun discharges, domestic violence, and "guns getting into the hands of those that will cause harm," city officials and police say.

In an effort to keep people safe, the city and police are holding a gun buy-back program Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 710 Sherman Parkway. The program does not require ID, is "completely anonymous" and people dropping off a gun will not be charged with illegal possession of that "specific firearm," a media release from New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, Acting Police Chief Renee Dominguez, and members of the police department reads.

The city will give gift cards in the following amounts: $10 for BB guns, $25 for single and double-shot (Derringer style) handguns, $50 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for pistols and revolvers (handguns), and $150 for assault weapons.
