New Haven Students Participate in Summer Academy at QU

From Quinnipiac University: The academy, which is co-sponsored by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Quinnipiac and the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology, includes 72 students representing every high school in New Haven. It began July 10 and concludes July 21.

The students spent the first few days in classrooms learning about entrepreneurship and the steps necessary to turn an idea into a business plan before submitting projects for consideration.

The students have been divided into groups and given 16 projects to work on. They will design prototypes and present the projects to a special panel on July 21. Some of the projects include a solar freezer, cellphone applications, voice activated sunglasses and makeup stickers.

Quinnipiac students are helping run the program along with interns from New Haven Promise, a location-based program that provides scholarships up to 100 percent tuition for residents and graduates of New Haven Public Schools and approved charter schools.

The Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology provides market relevant career training programs in the health sciences and culinary arts to the under-employed and unemployed, as well as after-school arts programming for low- to moderate-income urban youth at risk of dropping out of school.
