Obituary: John (Jack) E. Hansen, Sr., of New Haven

Jack, always dedicated to his family, community and church, worked many years at Cyclops-Detroit Steel and for Foote School in New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, CT - (From Sisk Brothers Funeral Home) John E. Hansen, Sr (Jack) peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family, at home on Friday, June 18, 2021 at the age of 84.

Jack was born on October 14, 1936 in New Haven, Connecticut to Edward S. and Mae (Gerard) Hansen. He attended Saint Francis Grade School and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1954.

He served two years in the US Navy. In 1962, he married Margaret (Margie) Donohue Hansen. Jack worked for many years at Cyclops-Detroit Steel in Hamden, followed by many more years at the Foote School in New Haven, where he was cherished and respected by staff and students alike.

A lifetime resident of New Haven, Jack was dedicated to his large family, community, and church.

For many years Jack enjoyed playing tennis and sailing with his friends. In his retirement, he played golf often and got together regularly with his lifelong friends at their “clubhouse,” Cosmo’s Barbershop.

He took many trips with his wife to Newport and Cape Cod, as well as Key West, New Orleans, California, and Ireland.

Together they enjoyed cruises to Bermuda, the Panama Canal, and the Mediterranean. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, UCONN basketball, and Yale football.

Jack is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Charles Hansen.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Mary Reynolds and her husband, Jack, John Hansen, Jr. and partner Len Suzio, Elizabeth Case and her husband Tyson, David Hansen and his wife Britt, and Thomas Hansen and his former wife Jina.

He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Meg, Lizzie, and Eileen Reynolds; Julia, Timothy and Taryn Case; Emma, Thomas, and Mikka Hansen, and Luke Ginieres.

He is also survived by many lifelong friends, nephews, and nieces.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Church, 129 Edwards Street in New Haven on Thursday Morning at 10:00 AM.

Friends are asked to go directly to church. Burial in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 - 7 pm in Sisk Brothers Funeral Home 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden.
