Rev. Eldren Morrison, of Varick Memorial AME Zion Church, will be departing New Haven and embarking on a new journey at the end of this month. The nine year Pastor of Varick Memorial, most known for launching New Haven’s Booker T. Washington Academy, will be returning to his South Atlantic origin to embrace a new adventure in ministry.
“I cannot leave without acknowledging the amazing family we’ve built here, in this church and this city. You all have played an integral role in my growth as a man, a Pastor, and a community leader, and that will never be ignored,” Pastor Morrison mentioned in his letter to the Varick Memorial congregation and community partners on Wednesday.

Morrison, who has grown Varick Memorial tremendously during his tenure—from 250 members to over 2,000 members—has been responsible for uniting the community and officials to create dialogue for some of the most sensitive subjects; spanning from the Charleston, SC church murders to, most recently, the police-involved killings happening around the nation.
During Pastor Morrison's time in New Haven, he has been a community leader, a dedicated pastor and a loving family man. Though his departure saddens many, he leaves this congregation with one call-to-action: “continue this work”.

“We, collaboratively improved the state of this church, grew this congregation, and became one of the leading churches in New Haven, this state and the A.M.E. Zion denomination at large. This work and progress must continue", Morrison emphatically declared.
Rev. Morrison’s final service will be this Sunday, August 28, 2016 at all three services (7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 a.m.). He will be joined by various governmental and city officials—including Governor Malloy, Mayor Harp, and Former Mayor DeStefano. Varick’s Family Reunion will follow, promptly at 1:00 p.m.
