LBI Awarded $5.4 Million Contract by U.S. Navy

Groton-based LBI has been awarded a contract to design and manufacture a launch and recovery system for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs)

Groton, Conn. September 4, 2018 – Groton-based LBI has been awarded a contract to design and manufacture a launch and recovery system for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) by the Combatant Craft Division (CCD) of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, in Norfolk, Virginia. The five-year contract has a total value of $5.4 million.

Under the contract, LBI will develop a lightweight carbon fiber composite launch and recovery system for UUVs from an 11 meter RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat). With more than 47 years of experience in naval architecture, engineering, and advanced composites technology, LBI’s team will leverage their extensive knowledge and expertise of UUVs and Navy Special Operations protocol and requirements to develop this cutting-edge launch and recovery system for the Navy.

“We are excited to be working closely with the Combatant Craft Division (CCD) during the development of the final design and prototype system for this important project,” said LBI President Peter Legnos.

LBI is utilizing the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of Applied Physical Science (APS), also located in Groton, to perform the structural analysis of the composite structures for the system. “APS has significant resources for the finite element analysis of advanced composite structures and is the right company to work with,” Legnos said. LBI is a founding member of the Connecticut Undersea Supply Chain Consortium, (CUSC), and is proud to celebrate the capabilities of Connecticut companies.
