NEW LONDON, CT – Today, Mayor Michael E. Passero announced that the city has three new bike racks, thanks to the efforts of the New London Parking Authority and the Office of Development and Planning. The new racks, located at convenient stop points city-wide, are a key component to the city’s Bike Network Plan. The Plan, part of a larger, regional plan to enhance non-motorized transportation supported by the Southeastern CT Council of Governments, has been in development for a year.

The total scope of the bike racks, including installation, represents a small investment of approximately $2,000 from the Parking Authority, that results in a big impact and return on investment. “Increasing our ridership and their safety is incredibly important to our office. Connecting riders to several of our parks, landmarks and neighborhoods is the goal and bike racks are part of the infrastructure to make this goal a reality,” stated Felix Reyes, Director of Economic Development and Planning for the city.

Carey E. Redd, II, CAPP, Director/CEO, New London Parking Authority stated that “…the NLPA whole hardheartedly supports its investment in bike racks for Cyclists. Cycling benefits our community by decreasing the demand for parking and removing vehicles off thoroughfares resulting in a significant decrease in gases dispersed in our atmosphere which make for a significantly better community for our residents, taxpayers and visitors.”

This project complements the overall bike plan for the city, which was designed in partnership with Kent + Frost of Mystic. Kent + Frost analyzed city streets and thoroughfares throughout the city for the safest, most efficient bike routes to direct cyclists from the north border with Waterford continuously south to a natural terminus at Ocean Beach Park.
