New London Names New Police Chief
Acting Police Chief Brian M. Wright is being promoted to police chief.

NEW LONDON, CT — Mayor Michael E. Passero and the New London City Council are pleased to announce the selection of Acting Police Chief Brian M. Wright as the Chief of Police for the city of New London. They are extending an invitation to community and general public to witness the swearing in of Chief Wright on July 14, 2021, at 5:30 p.m. on the waterfront at City Pier (behind the Railroad Station) in the City of New London.
Wright is being promoted to the full-time position of Police Chief based upon his extensive experience, work performance, and vision. He has a commitment for a community and police approach to addressing issues, crime prevention, and enhancing the quality of life in all neighborhoods in the City of New London.

Chief Wright, who grew up in the city of Bridgeport, has been with the New London Police Department for nearly 27 years. He and his wife have two children, a son in college and a daughter in high school.
A graduate of Notre Dame Catholic High School, he attended the University of Rhode Island, where he played football and graduated with a degree in consumer affairs with a concentration in marketing. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy (University of Virginia), where he earned a certificate in Police Leadership.

Chief Wright has held a wide variety of positions within the police department, including patrol officer, directed patrol officer assigned to the Safe Neighborhoods patrol unit, investigator in the vice and narcotics unit, and a D.A.R.E. and youth officer. He has been a Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Acting Police Chief, and he has served as the department’s public information officer. He is also a certified police instructor with the state’s police academy, the department coordinator for the (C.I.T.) Crisis Intervention Team, the department coordinator and active member of the department’s PEER Support program. Additionally, he is a nationally certified Crisis Negotiator. He has also supervised and coordinated the department’s State Re-Accreditation.
