During a media gathering Monday afternoon recorded by Fox 61, Derby Police Chief Gerald Narowski said that McCollough's handgun was recovered at the scene.
Connecticut State Police detectives were called in to oversee the investigation into the shooting. The area was closed off temporarily on Monday while authorities worked on the case.
The shooting occurred after McCollough and a juvenile approached an officer who was in a squad car, according to Narowski.
The two banged on the squad car windows and appeared to be in distress. The officer was at a traffic light and pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road. As he was trying to figure out what was going on, McCollough turned and fired a gun toward another approaching vehicle. The officer then shot McCollough.
Narowski said the juvenile suspect was not injured.
The vehicle that was shot remained at the scene, and the operator was not injured, and state police have not released that person's identity.
Derby police officers are not outfitted with body cameras, Narowski said.
"The incident was contained to the immediate area and there is no ongoing threat to the community," Derby police wrote on Facebook.
The case remains under investigation, and additional charges are pending, according to state police.
Detectives from WDMCS are headed to the town of Ansonia to assist in the investigation of an OIS. No further information is available at this time. Updates will be provided once available.
