Derby-Shelton Bridge Construction To Begin In Spring

The project will increase pedestrian and bicycle access to both Shelton and Derby downtown areas.

SHELTON, CT — Construction worker on the Derby-Shelton Bridge is scheduled to begin this spring after the construction contract was awarded to Mohawk Northeast Inc.

The project will include an extension of a cycle track and pedestrian walkway and better lighting, according to the Naugatuck Valley Council Of Governments. Work will allow for greater access to and from the Shelton and Derby downtown areas, especially for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge was built in 1918 and remains in good structural shape, but some elements such as the pavement structure have deteriorated, according to NVCOG.
