SHELTON & DERBY, CT — Connecticut is among the top states for vaccinating its population against the coronavirus, but there is still wide variability in vaccination rates between towns. Around 42 percent of Connecticut’s total population is fully vaccinated; 57 percent have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention In Shelton 17,575 residents have been fully vaccinated as of May 5, which is about 43 percent of the total Shelton population — in total 56 percent of the town population has received at least one dose, according to DPH. In Derby, the numbers are 4,098 residents have been fully vaccinated, which is about 33 percent of the town. About 50 percent have received at least one dose in Derby.

Cases Connecticut’s infection rate continues to drop, and fewer towns are in the red zone warning level for coronavirus infections. There were 17.2 average daily cases per 100,000 residents between April 18 and May 1, according to the state Department of Public Health. There have been 3,766 cases recorded since the pandemic began and 174 coronavirus deaths; in Derby, those numbers are 1,292 cases recorded since the pandemic began and 18 coronavirus deaths. Shelton had 20.2 average daily cases per 100,000 residents between April 18 and May 1 and a positive test rate of 4.70 percent. There were 25.4 average daily cases per 100,000 residents in the previous two-week reporting period. Derby had 23.4 average daily cases per 100,000 residents during the same period and a positive test rate of 4.70 percent. There were 30.2 average daily cases per 100,000 residents in the previous two-week reporting period. It’s important to note that a relatively small number of cases can have a big effect on the case rate, especially in smaller towns.
