Shelton & Derby Coronavirus Infection Rates Drop

SHELTON & DERBY, CT — The coronavirus vaccination pace has slowed in Connecticut, but the state’s infection rate has dropped dramatically in recent weeks.

Around 47 percent of Connecticut’s total population is fully vaccinated; 58 percent have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than seven out of every 10 adults has received at least one dose.

In Shelton 19,351 residents have been fully vaccinated as of May 12, which is about 47 percent of the total population — in total 57 percent of the town population has received at least one dose, according to the state Department of Public Health. The corresponding numbers in Derby are 4,655; 38 percent; and 52 percent.

Cases

Connecticut’s infection rate continues to plummet, and fewer towns are only 26 municipalities in the red zone warning level for coronavirus infections. There were 12.2 average daily cases per 100,000 residents between April 25 and May 8; that is a drop from 17.2 in the previous two-week period.

Shelton recorded 42 new coronavirus cases between May 5 and 13, according to DPH’s preliminary data, while Derby recorded 10 new coronavirus cases.

Shelton had 11.6 average daily cases per 100,000 residents between April 25 and May 8 and a positive test rate of 3.20 percent. There were 20.2 average daily cases per 100,000 residents in the previous two-week reporting period.

Derby had 19.1 average daily cases per 100,000 residents between April 25 and May 8 and a positive test rate of 4.50 percent. There were 23.4 average daily cases per 100,000 residents in the previous two-week reporting period.

It’s important to note that a relatively small number of cases can have a big effect on the case rate, especially in smaller towns.
