James Michael Johnston, 55, of Long Hill Ave., is charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, risk of injury to a minor and third-degree strangulation.
Police said Johnston choked a woman during an argument, then tried to choke her again. She was able to escape and called 911, police said.
Johnston's bond was set at $5,000 for an appearance in Derby Superior Court.
