1 Killed, 1 Seriously Injured In Southbury Crash

The two victims were outside their vehicle on the side of Interstate 84 when another vehicle struck them, according to state police.

SOUTHBURY, CT — A 36-year-old Wolcott man was killed and a 72-year-old Southbury woman was seriously injured Thursday evening when they were struck by a vehicle on Interstate 84 near Exit 15 in Southbury, according to Connecticut State Police.

Michael Canby and Cynthia Northrop were standing on the side of I-84 westbound after their vehicles were involved in a crash, police said. Just before 6 p.m., a third vehicle, driven by 37-year-old Manuel Melendez, of Waterbury, struck the driver's side of Northrop's vehicle, causing it to hit Northrop.

After striking Northrop's vehicle, Melendez's vehicle then struck and killed Canby, according to police.

Melendez was not injured in the crash. He has not been charged; the crash remains under investigation.
