"If the pets had not had rabies vaccinations, they may have been placed on a six-month quarantine, or even been subject to mandated euthanasia as rabies virus poses a public health and safety issue," said Southbury Animal Control Officer Melody Sandquist.
Coyotes' mating season is now through April or May, Sandquist advised, and during this time their heightened testosterone levels can make them more territorial and aggressive.

Animal Control officials are urging residents to make certain all their pets are up to date with their rabies vaccinations, and not leave them unattended while outdoors, especially during the evening. All pets' encounters with wildlife should be reported to Animal Control immediately at 203-262-0613, Sandquist said.
Common symptoms of rabies in animals include unprovoked aggression, difficulty walking, and excess salivation, according to information provided by the state Department of Agriculture.
