IKEA's New Power Play Will Blow You Away
IKEA announced a power play this week as it continues plans to expand in the U.S.
Hoopeston, Illinois – IKEA is now the proud owner of a wind farm project, part of the what the company says is its continued commitment to renewable energy.
The recently purchased 98 megawatt wind farm project is the largest IKEA Group investment in renewable energy and is part of the company's effort to generate as much renewable energy as it consumes by 2020.
The project is currently being constructed by Apex Clean Energy and is expected to be fully operational by the first half of 2015.
"The U.S. has amazing wind and sun resources that will never run out. We are delighted to make this investment – it is great for jobs, great for energy security, and great for our business. Importantly, it’s great for the future of our climate," stated Steve Howard, Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA Group, in a press release.
IKEA is planning to continue to expand in the United States, with three new stores planned in 2014 and 2015.
The amount of power that will be generated by Hoopeston Wind annually is calculated to be the equivalent of 34,000 average U.S. households, or the energy consumed by 70 IKEA stores.
