Pomperaug Runner Headed to National Championships

The sophomore qualified for the national meet in San Diego by placing in the top 10 of the Northeast Regionals Saturday.

SOUTHBURY, CT — Runners from four Connecticut schools, including a standout sophomore from Pomperaug High School, have qualified for the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships by virtue of placing in the top 10 at the Northeast Regional Saturday in New York City.

Kate Wiser, who won the Class MM championship by more than a minute, the State Open by 59 seconds and the New England Championships by 38 seconds, placed fifth with a time of 17:52.80 over the 3.1-mile course in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Sydney Masciarelli, a sophomore at Marianapolis Prep in Thompson who resides in Northbridge, Mass., won the girls race in 17:12.60, and will also compete in the nationals Dec. 8 in San Diego.

Matthew Farrell of Glastonbury, a junior at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, finished eighth in the boys race in 15:38.70, while Choate Rosemary Hall senior Mustafe Dahir of Wallingford took ninth in 15:39.10.

The national championships will be webcast live for fans to view from Balboa Park in San Diego at www.footlockercc.com on Saturday, Dec. 8. The girls will run at 12:15 p.m. Eastern time, followed by the boys at 1 p.m.
