Pomperaug Runner Makes Top 5 at New England Championships

A total of 34 Connecticut runners placed in the top 50 individuals at the annual New England Championships Saturday in Maine.

BELFAST, ME — Connecticut runners in general, and a Pomperaug High School freshman in particular, turned in impressive performances Saturday at the New England Cross Country Championships at Troy Howard Middle School.

Xavier High School of Middletown won the boys team division with 74 points, outdistancing the 103 posted by runner-up Staples of Westport. Four other boys teams from Connecticut finished in the top 10.

Individually, State Open champion Drew Thompson duplicated that success at the New Englands, covering the 3.1 mile course in 15:16.66 to leave runnerup Riley Fenoff of the Danville School (VT) behind by nearly 32 seconds.

Pinkerton (NH) won the girls team title with 163 points, with Glastonbury placing third with 212. Two other Connecticut schools placed in the girls top 10.

Two-time State Open winner Morgan McCormick of Wilton was the first girl from the Nutmeg State across the finish line, 19 seconds behind winner Julia Robitaille of Manchester West (NH) to claim fourth place.

A total of 22 Connecticut boys and 12 girls placed in the top 50. The boys race had 256 competitors, while 267 athletes ran in the girls race.
