SOUTHBURY, CT — A homeowner used a dry chemical fire extinguisher Tuesday to attack a chimney fire at a Chain Trail home until Southbury firefighters arrived to finish dousing the blaze, according to fire officials.

The fire was reported at about 8 p.m., when the homeowner saw flames shooting out from around the stovepipe of a wood-burning stove.

While calling 911, the homeowner began using the fire extinguisher to douse the blaze. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy charring around the stovepipe and finished wetting it down.

"This is an excellent example of the benefits of owning a fire extinguisher," fire officials wrote on Facebook. No injuries were reported. "With the amount of damage crews found, there is little doubt the fire would have been much worse had it not been for the preparation of the homeowners."
